Submission – Domestic Gas Reservation Scheme Draft Design Framework

27 July 2026

Chemistry Australia welcomes the Federal Government’s announcement of a gas reservation scheme to strengthen domestic supply and affordability for Australian chemical manufacturers and industrial users.

Securing an affordable, reliable Australian gas supply for chemical and plastics manufacturing is critical to keeping the Australian economy strong and globally competitive.  To remain competitive and support future investment, our industry requires access to long-term gas contracts and gas prices below $10/GJ.

Gas is a critical input for the chemicals and plastics sector, which underpins 108 of Australia’s 114 industries and supports around 240,000 jobs across supply chains from fertiliser production for agriculture to essential inputs for mining, healthcare and food production.

Australia must derive greater benefit from its natural gas resources while maintaining its position as a reliable exporter.  We can achieve both objectives, supporting export markets and maintaining a vibrant chemical manufacturing sector that adds value, creates jobs, and strengthens sovereign capability.

Please review Chemistry Australia's submission to the Domestic Gas Reservation Scheme Design Framework consultation for more details.
