Annual health & safety report 2022

2022 report coverOur annual Health and Safety Performance Report is an important long-term initiative of the Australian chemistry industry. It has provided detailed insights into health and safety performance of Chemistry Australia members since 2000.

The Report plays a central role in improving health and safety performance for the sector, providing insights to help businesses benchmark and identify areas for future improvement.

It is also important in promoting the principles of health and safety to industry value chain partners, external stakeholders and the broader community, and allows our members to share examples of best practice and encourage others to act.

Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy

This year’s report is the final to align with Safe Work Australia’s 2012-2022 Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy.

During that time, the Chemistry Australia Board and members adopted three targets for improvement and monitoring:

  • Further 30 per cent reduction in workplace injuries (based on LTIFR 5-year rolling average by 2022
  • Continued tracking of chemical and non-chemical related Lost Time Injuries (LTI) and Medical Treatment Injuries (MTI)
  • Reporting and tracking of musculoskeletal injuries related to LTIs and MTIs

We are pleased to report members have accomplished substantial and consistent improvements to workplace health and safety in 2012-2022.

2022 Reporting

We are proud to present the results of the 2022 Health and Safety Performance Report.

Since 2012, our members have achieved:

  • A decade of zero fatalities
  • A 16 per cent reduction of Lost Time Injuries (LTI) 5-year rolling average*
  • LTIs five times lower than Australian manufacturing sector
  • LTIs three times lower than broader Australian chemical sector
  • MTIs reduced by almost 60 per cent

Unfortunately, we were unable to meet the ambitious target of a 30 per cent reduction in Lost Time Injuries (LTIFR 5-year rolling average).  However, we are very proud of the industry’s achievement of a 16 per cent reduction in LTIs during the last 10 years based on a more stringent measurement than used by comparable industries.

*Chemistry Australia’s metric is based on one or more lost workdays per injury versus the lost time injuries of a week or more aligned to the national strategy

Additional resources for participants

Every company that participates in the Health and Safety Performance Report receives a confidential Benchmarking Report.

This valuable tool allows members to benchmark their own results against peers, promote internal discussion, gain new insights and generate ideas to drive further improvements in their workplace.
