Northern Territory decision to lift gas moratorium welcomed by Chemistry Australia

17 April 2018

Chemistry Australia welcomes the decision by the Northern Territory Government to allow the responsible development of unconventional gas in the Territory.

"We strongly support the decision to guide development on a case by case basis, with scientific consideration of each opportunity, in partnership with communities,” said Chemistry Australia CEO Samantha Read.

“These opportunities could bring substantial benefit for Territorians. If suitable reserves were found in the Northern Territory, it is possible that this could see the development of local manufacturing hubs. This approach provides a balanced framework for responsible economic growth,” said Ms Read.

Natural gas has been a key foundation of the development of the chemistry industry and downstream manufacturing in other Australian states. The Australian chemistry industry creates long-term secondary industry around gas extraction that adds significant value to Australia’s resources, improves economic diversity and creates jobs down the value chain.

“Australia's gas crisis can be improved by more gas, from more gas suppliers, into a more competitive market place. The development of that gas must be well regulated, with a strong social licence a net benefit,” said Ms Read.

“We look forward to working with the NT Government on the development of this community asset to benefit all Territorians,” said Ms Read.

“We urge governments in the southern states to make use of the engagement, research and balanced outcomes from the NT to enable responsible growth, rather than further restricting supply and endangering jobs,” said Ms Read.

Gas is particularly essential to the business of chemistry. It’s important for process energy, and it is also a non-substitutable ingredient for advanced manufacturing. The Australian chemistry industry uses 10% of Australia’s domestic gas for its molecular properties to create a huge range of products essential to our everyday lives. These include fertilisers for our crops, cleaning products for health and hygiene in our homes and hospitals, and smart packaging to keep our food fresher for longer.
