Chemistry Australia welcomes the recent announcement from the ninth meeting of Australia’s Environment Ministers of a structured, product stewardship approach to the reduction and more effective management of our country’s waste.

Chemistry Australia is keen to leverage the capability of the chemistry sector to not only reduce the amount of waste Australia produces, but also develop new methods to improve the way the waste is consequently used, re-purposed and recycled.

Chemistry Australia CEO Samantha Read said the Association is pleased a cross-sector reference group will be established so that all parts of the economy can play their role in dealing with this particularly complex problem.

“Chemistry Australia and our members recognise that everyone has a role to play to reduce and deal with waste in Australia,” said Ms Read.

“The chemistry industry will be critical in helping Australia achieve the objectives of the National Waste Policy Action Plan.”

“Our unique capabilities in polymer science, engineering, manufacturing and market development ensure our sector is well-positioned to provide solutions for the complex challenges associated with managing Australia’s waste.”

“We look forward to working with governments, businesses and communities to develop better environmental and business outcomes from the reduction and effective management of Australia’s waste.”
