Hon Trevor Evans MP shares insights into National Waste Policy Action Plan

09 February 2022

Special guest the Hon Trevor Evans MP shares insights into National Waste Policy Action Plan at Chemistry Australia Interface Event

Chemistry Australia and its members recently welcomed the Federal Assistant Minister of Waste Reduction and Environmental Management, the Hon Trevor Evans MP, to its 2019 Interface Event where the Minister shared his insights into the Government’s the National Waste Policy Action Plan.

The event provided Chemistry Australia members with exclusive access the Minister, who detailed how the government is supporting the creation of new markets for waste in Australia.

Australia’s Environment Ministers and the President of the Australian Local Government Association agreed to the National Waste Policy in December 2018, which sets a new unified direction for waste and recycling in Australia out to 2030.

The policy sets out specific targets to make Australia a world leader in waste management and recycling.

Minister Evans welcomed the contributions and leadership from business to address Australia’s waste and recycling challenges.

The Minister highlighted that it’s the first time a Federal Minister has taken on this area, reflecting the importance of the issue to Prime Minister Scott Morrison and the Federal Government.  Minister Evans also emphasised that it’s the first time a national waste policy has been developed and agreed to by all state and territory leaders.

The chemistry industry is in an ideal position to help Australia achieve key objectives of the National Waste Action Plan.

Our unique capabilities in manufacturing, polymer science and market development mean our industry is well-placed to provide solutions for the challenges associated with reducing and managing Australia’s waste.

Our sector is already taking action with the Plastics Stewardship Australia member interest group, which is focussed on helping communities, industry and government develop solutions to deal with this particularly complex problem.
