Methanol

Methanol (CH3OH), also known as methyl alcohol, is produced from natural gas by steam reforming and generating a synthesis gas (syngas) which is further reacted and then distilled to produce methanol.

Methanol value chain

Methanol is currently imported into Australia.

Methanol is used to manufacture other downstream products, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), acetic acid (CH₃COOH) and formaldehyde (CH₂O).

Hydrogen peroxide is used in a range of products including:

  • Cleaning and sanitising
  • Pulp and paper manufacturing
  • Mining
  • Food and textile manufacturing
  • Space industry.

Acetic acid (also known as ethanoic acid) is used to make vinegar, inks, dyes, photographic chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, rubber and plastics.

Formaldehyde is used in building materials and many household products. It is used in particleboard, plywood and fibreboard, and found in glues and adhesives.
