Framework Summary

The Sustainability Leadership Framework provides the platform for PACIA to deliver leading programs, tools and policy, and for member companies to integrate sustainability into core business.

The launch of PACIA's Sustainability Leadership Framework in June 2008 was a significant milestone and flags an exciting era for the Australian plastics and chemicals industry. The development of the Framework was supported by EPA Victoria, and was a key product of the first Sustainability Covenant between PACIA and EPA Victoria.

The release of the Sustainability Leadership Framework came after extensive industry research throughout 2007 and 2008. The research - including national forums with members and stakeholders: including local communities; people who use the industry's products and services; government and peak environmental groups - gathered important industry information on sustainability practices within the industry and new opportunties.

The Framework demonstrates that sustainability is a business opportunity. The Framework addresses waste, water, climate change and also moves beyond environmental challenges, to include community and stakeholder engagement, workplace health and safety, security and product management. Innovation, workforce engagement and accountability are central to the Framework.

The Framework provides PACIA members with the essential tools, resources and programs to take action and integrate sustainability into their business operations, to innovate in the market and supply chain, and to position for business transformation.

Many PACIA members have already committed to using the Framework within their business, including small and medium sized enterprises, as well as national and multi-national member companies, and it has been exciting to see the strong support from a wide cross section of PACIA members.

The PACIA Board has formed a new Council; the Sustainability Leadership Implementation Council, to drive implementation of the Framework across the PACIA membership. The Council comprises representatives drawn from the PACIA Board, Councils, and broader PACIA membership.

PACIA partners with key organisations, departments and agencies across Australia to support the implementation of the Sustainability Leadership Framework, and the development of the Framework was an outcome of the first Sustainability Covenant between PACIA and EPA Victoria.

The PACIA sustainability team collaborates to develop an integrated approach for the Sustainability Leadership Framework and delivers major initiatives and programs for members across water, energy, materials and product lifecycle.
