Insulation roadmap charts course to comfier, healthier homes that reduce costs for households

19 September 2024

Shared on behalf of Chemistry Australia member Interest Group, the Australian Modern Building Alliance (AMBA). AMBA is a member of Affiliated Insulation Industry Coalition (AIIC), which has funded the 2024 Roadmap update.

The EEC, in collaboration with the Affiliated Insulation Industry Coalition, is pleased to announce the release of the Insulation Installation Roadmap.

Amid the ongoing cost-of-living crisis and the growing need to adapt to a changing climate, insulation remains a critical solution for improving the health, comfort, and affordability of homes and buildings. This industry-led roadmap focuses on enhancing safety standards for both installers and householders while addressing Australia’s under-insulated building stock.

Key recommendations include:

  • Enhanced compliance measures for new buildings and major renovations.
  • Increased education, training, and certification for installers.
  • Stronger government support for insulation installation requirements.
  • A holistic approach that integrates insulation with other building efficiency improvements.

The coalition behind the roadmap includes leading industry groups representing the insulation supply chain, manufacturers, the building sector, insulation installers, and electricians.

Stuart Braine, Deputy Chair of the Affiliated Insulation Industry Coalition, said, “The energy price crisis and reports of cold, damp homes this winter highlight Australia’s poorly insulated and energy-inefficient housing stock. Millions of Australian homes, built before mandatory energy efficiency requirements, are in desperate need of significant thermal performance upgrades. These improvements will not only create healthier, more comfortable living environments, but also generate thousands of stable jobs over the next decade.”

EEC CEO Luke Menzel praised the insulation industry’s renewed commitment to expanding the role of insulation in cutting energy costs and supporting Australia’s journey toward net zero emissions.

“The average quality of Australian buildings is appalling compared to international standards. They’re leaky, cold, and expensive to run. In a country like ours, living in a healthy, comfortable home shouldn’t be a privilege—it should be a right. There’s overwhelming evidence that better insulation reduces energy bills, improves health outcomes, and can help Australia meet its Paris climate goals. Insulation is, and always has been, a no-brainer.”

Building on the 2021 Roadmap for Quality Control and Safety in Insulation Installation, which led to a range of collaborative efforts and significant progress within the insulation industry, this fresh roadmap continues the push for safer, more effective insulation practices across Australia.
